The mysteries of Snæfellsnes
Tour details
Is the Snæfellsnes Peninsula a gateway to the center of the Earth, as Jules Verne suggested in his bestseller? We’ve been there many times but still haven’t found it. However, to be completely honest and transparent, we also found no evidence that it is not there!
The journey we are taking you on is by no means only a sentimental pursuit of the heroes of a well-known book. Iceland has three National Parks, with Snæfellsjökull National Park being the second largest, covering an area of 170 square kilometers. The peninsula is of great historical, cultural and social importance. It is often called a mini-Iceland because here you will see volcanoes, a glacier, rivers, fjords, mountains, sheep grazing on them, tiny fishing villages, and waterfalls. During the day, you will not only be amazed by the beautiful landscapes but also listen to local stories about the half-man-half-troll Bárður Snæfellsás – the Protector of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
During this trip, you will:
- travel around the longest volcanic belt in Iceland;
- visit the second-biggest National Park in Iceland;
- see what the Snæfellsjökull glacier looks like and learn about half man half troll that disappeared inside;
- see the majestic rock formations;
- see some Icelandic trolls and learn more about their place in the local folklore;
- visit our favorite Icelandic beach, where you can test your strength in a very traditional way;
- visit a traditional fishing village and learn about local customs.
This tour is for you if:
- you want to experience as much of the real Iceland as possible in one day;
- you are going to this country with your family – including younger children or seniors;
- you want to spend your time actively but without much effort;
- this is your first trip to this country;
- want to learn as much as possible about Iceland from experienced guides who know the country inside out!
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Ytri-Tunga- try to spot a colony of seals that often visit this beach. The best time to spot them is between June and August, but we have also seen them in winter.
- Rauðfeldsgjá gorge and the picturesque fishing village of Arnarstapi, where you will learn more about the half-man-half-troll we mentioned earlier.
- Lóndrangar, spectacular rock formations for our visitors and petrified trolls for us, living here;
- Djúpalónssandur, Black Lava Pearl Beach, our favorite beach in Iceland;
- The west coast of the peninsula is a beautiful spectacle of nature: dramatic cliffs, spectacular rock formations and the Snæfellsjökull volcano-glacier towering above it all;
- Kirkjufell, the most photographed mountain in Iceland. It is known e.g. fans of the Game of Thrones series, is exceptionally photogenic. We will stop at the best place to go down to the waterfalls and capture it from the best perspective.
